Language in Chennai

Chennai is the fourth largest metropolitan city in India. The capital of Tamil Nadu is cosmopolitan in nature.The city is inhabited by people belonging to various communities. Hence the language spoken here is also more than one. English is the most prevalent official language in Chennai. It is widely used and understood by the people of the cultured city of South. However,Tamil is the mother tongue of the original inhabitants of the place. Madras Tamil or Madras bashai is a fusion of Tamil and English, where some expressions are borrowed from Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi-Urdu. Madras bashai wonderfully blends the grammar rules,suffix and prefix of other languages to coin new words.Some sources of the newly coined words are also from French, Portuguese and Dutch.
