Parthsarthy Temple
Situated on Triplicane High Road 3.2 km down south from Marina towards Kapaleswar. Parthasarathy or the Krishna Temple is a beautiful piece of sculpture, particularly its carvings.Built by the Pallav Kings in the 8th century, Lord Vishnu is emanated in five incarnation.Vedabhalli Amman, the wife of the God is also there in the smaller temple. Besides, See Krishna is in the temple surrounded by kith and kin.The Vijaynagar kings renovated the temple in the 16th century.
Kapaleeshwar Temple
Built in the thirteenth century, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva constructed in the Dravidian architectural form.It is the largest temple in the city. Several puranic legends are also sculpted here.The evening prayers held here offers spiritual solace to tired hearts.
Santhome Cathedral Basilica
Located at Maylapur on the south of Marina, the cathedral was built by St Thomas. Some other say that it was built by a Christian Theosopher who came from Persia who built the church on the grave of St. Thomas. It is a famous Pilgrimage centre.
Fort St. George
To the east of the cityat Kamraj Salai (south of High Court), Fort St George is located. With a 20 ft high wall around it and 3x1 mile area, the fort has got three main gates-Marina, Mount Road and on the side of Punamel High Road. The fort was built in 1640-53 by Francis Day of Eat India Company. India's highest flagship is found in this fortress.The fort stands for the mighty British Empire.
St Mary Church
It is situated on the southern side of the State Assembly. This is the first Anglican Church in the east .The Church was built with the donation of Elihoo yell, an America-born England resident here since his childhood.Built with a simple pattern ,the church was a solid structure having 1.3m thick wall and cannon-shell protective roof.It was renovated in1959.
Marina Beach
A big attraction for the tourists at Chennai. The credit for developing it into a tourist spot goes to Governor Mounstuart Elphinstone who changed the look of the spot in 1881-86. The 13km long beach to the S-East of George Town is the second longest beach in the world. The beach looks awesome at dusk when the setting sun spreads it orange wings. Studded with palm readers, fortune sellers and road side vendors selling delicacies, the beach is just a perfect zone for a lazy stroll.
National Art Gallery
Designed by Henry Arwin and built with sand stone in Mughal mould,the National Gallery on Pantheon Road in the south Egmore Railway station is indeed a beautiful building. The building originally raised as Victoria Memorial in 1906 was transformed into an art gallery in1951. The gallery has a rich collection of Rajput,Mughal and southern fine arts.
Museum in the premises of Art Gallery was founded in 1851 which exhibits invaluable bronze works of Soth India. There is novelty in the images of Ardhanariswar and Natraj. The works of sculpture of the stone and iron ages along with those obtained from the Buddhist shrine of Amravathi have enriched the gallery. Its limestone walls are full of Buddhist stories engraved on them. Various musical instruments are on display.
Anna Zoological Park
Situated over a 510 hectre area at Vandalur about 30 km away from the city. The place is famous for stuffed pre-historic animals, lions, bisons, night faring animals, birds, aquarium and a natural museum.
Cholamandal Shilpigram
Situated on the coastal belt, about 20km from Adier. Built in 1966, it is the place where the artists and sculptors live. One can view and buy different works of sculpture, boutique, terracota, graphics made by the artists and sculptors.
Snake Park
Built by Romulus Whitetaker, an American living in India.More than 500 snakes of 200 species are kept in open holes. Photographers are allowed. There are also crocodiles, agilators, lizards, chameleons, tortoise etc.
Light House
The 160 ft Light House built in 1894 is located beside the High Court and to the north side of the fortress. One can have a view of old Chennai from its top. Visibility extends upto 30 km in the sea.
Senate House
Built in 1874-79, the Senate House is a wonderful blend of Victorian architectural style with that of the Hindu, Jain and Muslim architecture is another landmark. It has a carved ceiling, coloured glass windows and a sitting capacity of 1600 persons.
Guindy National Park
Situated in the south near Guindy Rly Station, the national park is 300 acre wide. A perfect zone for the kids, the park is full of animals like black buck, spotted deer, civet cat, leopard, jackle and a whole lot more
Elliot's Beach
Popularly known as 'Bessei' among the locals, the Elliot's Beach is considered as the cleaniest beach in the city. It is the perfect address for the youth and for those who want to lose themselves in solitude.As the beach is devoid of any activity, it makes it a lucrative place for those who want to drown themselves in the lap of nature and indulge in self-introspection. The beach offers plenty of opportunity for sun bath. The Ashtalakshmi Temple and Velanganni Church are another attraction located in the vicinity of the beach.
Covelong Beach
Built by the Nawab of Carnatic, the beach located on the way of Mahabalipuram has metamorphosed into a luxury beach resort. The beach has historical significance also. In the year 1746, the French General Laboudonnais arrived with his troops.
